This and That
July 14th, 2005 by Northern FarmerWe’re in the middle of a heat wave here. It was still 90 at eight PM. Good time to be in the basement on the computer.I see in NorDakoda,( I’m talking upper midwestern here), some thunderstorms are forming. Hope they make it here. It’s been browning up all week with the mid 90s hanging in there.Watched two different thunderstorm systems narrowly miss us. Sure does zap a guy, almost looking forward to winter. But then all winter I’m looking forward to summer. And now I’m thinking, all summer I’m raising and harvesting crops for winter. In other words, everything we do is for winter. And in winter we do very little for summer, all the work is still for winter. Wonder what it would be like to live in the deep south?
Other than this heavy thinking that I sometimes get myself into things are still on track around here. Getting ready to start a cementing project. Had a 1000 ton silage pit dug out a few weeks ago and will have to cement out the floor. Oats is rapidly ripening so will have to fire up the old combine shortly. Will start cutting whatever 2nd crop hay there is in a couple of weeks. Also it’s county fair time soon around here and our local one is putting on a large sustainable farming, grazing, pasture chickens, and alternative energy fair with the normal one. I can’t miss that! And it’s another quiet indicator of a movement happening in the country. Farmers and homesteaders turning away from big ag and returning to a much better way!
