That One Percent

August 6th, 2005 by Northern Farmer

A response in a post below from Kansas Milkmaid is hard hitting, but so true,
” I see God working through small alternative farmers to build a great army. While it is a loney movement, one that estranges us from even church family it is one that is very powerful and effective for God. There are graves all around us. We live in a society of walking dead people. We live in churches with walking dead souls. But, as we hear the leading of God to farm the land, we are given life and know and acknowledge God. Kind of powerful huh?”

One of the most rewarding things in taking a full size farm and getting it out of mainstream corporate ag is knowing that no matter what, we’re doing the right thing. 99% of the time I know it’s the way to go and the only way to preserve it in the family but sometimes, that one percent, I have to wonder, am I leading my family wrong for not following what the New World Order wants? Wouldn’t it be nice to have a eight hour job again and have weekends, holidays, and vacations? Does God want me to shop till I drop? Should I go in easy debt to have the things that this family deserves? Heck, we could easily morgage this place for a couple of million with todays land prices. Why don’t we just cash out, take a couple of mil and live the good modern life instead of living like in a third world country? That one percent of the time offers plenty of temptation, doesn’t it? I’d be considered a saint if I sold it off for lots by our church. Ticket into heaven, eh?

But then what do we do if we did this? I can’t even imagine a life without tending our Lord’s land. Even if we would sell out and buy cheaper farmland somewhere else I would always know that I destroyed the land that was in my care for the Lord. KSmilkmaid’s analogy of the walking dead is so true with today’s society. I can’t thank her enough for her response to my post. Now that I typed down what that one percent of the time consists of, remember that the 99% will win out easily. Checking the cows in pasture, feeding the herd in winter, raising the chickens, picking the eggs, listen to horses greeting me in the early morning dawn, eating some of our own pork, beef, and venison sausage through the winter. Tending crops, feeling the heartache of grass burning up in drought, watching calves do the calf race in late April as the sun is going down.Watching corn grow that’s not supposed to out preform hybrids and it knocks em off by almost 50%, ( at this point, for anybody keeping track of that). Almost all the fresh food in summer from the garden.Working all the cattle in fall, branding, sorting, with a fun crew of willing workers. And most important, watching a family growing up that loves it so much.

And I really believe that the best is yet to come!

Agrarian…really good post! I didn’t know there were others out there who feel as I do, but I see you have links to other people’s pages, too. All this is what makes it hard for me to leave this place. I don’t know if you’ve kept up with my posts on the homestead forum, but our family is selling our little homestead (too small to be called a farm!), and leaving in a bus to travel as the Lord leads us. I have mixed feelings about it all, because I love working the land, and working with my animals. It is so hard to leave. Maybe the Lord has a place for us down the road somewhere, and this is the only way he could get us to go there. Anyway, the blessings of the Lord Jesus Christ on your place and your house.

    Welcome Grower!
To give up everything for the Lords service is the ultimate and I admire that so much. I’m glad you found your way here to this little Christian Agrarian community on the web. There’s some excellent bloggers here. I’ve been keeping track of your posts the last few months and have been watching as things progress for you. I don’t post much over there, mainly because this blog takes any spare time I have for the computer.
And if you come upon like minded people send them over to these blogs, they’d be so welcomed!
And may the Blessings of the Lord Jesus Christ be on you and your family as you start your ministry on the road.

One of my favorite jokes begins with one ole cowboy telling his friend:

“If I had a million dollars, why I’d just go to ranchin’ till it was all gone.”

You’re not foolish if you’re all about trading paper money for real riches. Just my opinion.

If I had millions, I’d buy a buch of land to farm it and set it aside for an inheritance for my children.

One percent? Cream rises to the top. You are truly a rich man.
