Minnesota Week

August 13th, 2005 by Northern Farmer

I just realized that this past week I wasn’t overwhelmed with work. Praise the Lord!! Things are so dry here that it’s hard to describe. We are so far behind on rain. The pastures are shot. There is hardly any second crop hay at all. I’ve been bringing hay out to some of the cows, and that’s something I’m not quite all the happy doing in the first half of August but that’s the way it goes. At least it cooled down. Now, Monday we’ll pull out the silage chopper. I’d rather chop than feed the hay so soon, so will chop small batches to keep everyone going in the pastures. Save the hay for when it’s 30 below or colder, because it’ll heat them cows up like firewood. We’re also on alert for the main silage chopping because if we get a warm spell it’ll burn down the corn swiftly and we have to chop green. Two years ago we chopped in August and it’s not the best thing in the world but at least it frees up fall. But all in all, things are under control here. The strangest thing is the deer flies have dissappeared, knock on wood, and it’s to dry for misquitoes. I’ve noticed most of the swallows have left looking for greener pastures. The crick is barely running and the electric fences won’t ground out. Sounds like the makin’s for a country song. We’re taking off in a bit to the local rodeo. The family has been looking forward to it for a long time. It’s mostly locals to cheer for, not a big time thing.

But all in all it was a good summer, and we thank our Lord so much for the bounty he has given us. We’ll make it through another nine month Minnesota winter without worrying all to much.
