Tired Today

August 17th, 2005 by Northern Farmer

Today was a different day here on the farm. First of all last night I had less than three hours of sleep. To any non farmers out there that have never experienced a dry spell wiping out alot of your years work, here’s the scoop. Last evening before bed I checked the computer radar looking for any sign of rain. I don’t know why I checked, just checked an hour before and nothing, and by golly there were some thunderheads forming over by the Dakota border and starting to move this way. Having had my hopes dashed so many times the recent weeks I had little hope. Went to bed and couldn’t sleep. One hour, two, and then I heard a rumble off in the distance. Now the eyes are open wide. Walk around the house in the dark looking out the windows facing the west and yup, flashes of lightning. Wait and wait, getting louder, another long hour and the rain started, raining good, and went on for an hour and a half. I couldn’t fall asleep for a while yet I was so happy and thankful to our Lord. Ended up with a strong inch when I went out and checked this morning.

We butchered a cow this morning for ground beef. We hire a guy that does the local butchering and cutting. He told me his son had just certified their farm organic. That floored me, they’re only seven miles away. After talking with him for a while I was totally impressed at what they’re doing and will be making a stop over there for a visit. I keep finding out more and more I’m not alone.

This afternoon I was talking to a neighbor about churches and she invited our family to their church sometimes in the near future. I was there once to a funeral and told the family I liked it. Very conservative church. And the family all agrees to check it out. I’ll get into that sometime in the near future.

Daughter Rachel sold her first chickens today! She sure is happy! Sold them live for a darn good price. The people wanted to butcher them themselves and who are we to argue. She’s already planning next years production. I just stood back and watched the business take place this evening. You know it makes a dad proud when he sees his daughter raise them up and finally sell the chickens all by herself. When all was said and done I just walked away thankful to be able to raise children like this.

Now I’ll hit the hay.
