Silage Harvest
September 15th, 2005 by Northern FarmerToday will be day two of silage harvest. We put in a full day yesterday without any mishaps and got a lot done. It seems to be going easier with the silage pit that was constructed this past summer. In fact much easier than building our normal large pile. There’s something about harvest in the fall season that is as old as creation itself. It’s alot of work, but it’s a content work, hard to explain really. Bringing in the years work and storing it away for the cold dark months ahead. Knowing the animals have food for the long months ahead. Thankful for what the Lord has provided.
Well, better get outside now and get to work on some chores, it’ll start getting light out in an hour.

Thanks for giving me the memory of years on the dairy farm. Hubby ran cutter and I drove one of the dump trucks under the blower and hauled it to silo (we had our silage in a long hole in the ground) and dumped it so someone could drive a tractor and pack it. We covered the silage with heavy black plastic and then covered that with sawdust and old tires. We uncovered as we used it. I loved the smell when we cut silage! Work hard but have fun!

Ah, the rhythm of changing seasons.
‘While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.’ Gen. 8:22

Peggy,
That’s how we do it. I run the chopper out in the field. One thing about silage, it’s not like small grains, no itch. A person could lay in the stuff and be basically clean. And I love the smell of it too.
Balestacker,
Changing seasons, I love it! I think fall is my favorite.
