Monday Morning
July 17th, 2006 by Northern FarmerThe big weekend is finally over and it was great! I hope to beg, borrow or steal some photos from PJ who took hundreds of pictures this weekend at the big doings. It was about the hottest day of the year around here Saturday with temps at 102 degrees. And the amazing thing is nobody went down from that. Now as far as yours truly, I would have went down from the heat, but a couple of seven year old girls would come over by me with squirt guns and unload them on my head and down the back of my neck. Those little angels were a blessing!
Today we’ll start, or hope to start swathing oats. It’s a bit ahead of schedual this year with the heat, not the greatest stuff, but then again not that poor either. The wise say there’ll be a cool down and I hope them folks got it right for once, because it sure will feel cool if it’s under 90 degrees.
So now with all the big doings a thing of the past, summer will get back on track around here as far as farming is concerned. There’s also a 150 chicks arriving this week, plus ten turkeys. Chicken tractor manufacturing is moving along with us having a definate preference for the 8 by 8 models. The chickens we do have outside are moving right along, Gilbert the goose is growing and growing and……. Almost flying now! So it’s about time to get outside this morning and start the new week.

Hi Tom! So glad your meeting went well in spite of the high temps. We’re having killer heat here again today and predicted for tomorrow. Extreme humidity and in the high 90’s with the sun like a blazing ball of fire. Phew! I’m glad I don’t have lots of outdoor chores. I let the chickens out to freerange a little later than usual and they sprinted for the bushes like a fox was after them. When do we get to see pics of Gilbert? P.S. Pardon the ignorance, but what does swathing oats mean exactly?

Things heating up round here too Tom, 104 in Catskill, NY today. Be posting a photo of that OP corn here in a day or two, going to measure out to the tassle the height of the tallest. What’s your guess?

We had 110 here. It was still 105 at 8 p.m. this evening. It is so hot. The cows are giving pastuerized milk straight from the udder. The chickens are laying hard boiled eggs.
Yes, yes, we need pics of Gilbert. Makes us want to get a goose. Sending warm wishes your way.

Emily,
I see this blog is back online this morning but I hope that you can get a general idea on what swathing is from the comment that I posted on your blog last evening. Last evening when this blog wouldn’t come up I started wondering if I had lost it for good. Funny, but I kinda wished it would have zapped away into never, never land. But that’s all settled now, eh. Thanks!
Scott,
Glad it’s over for now here. Cool air coming in the window as I type, that good NW air, my favorite. Not a city from here to Moscow to pollute it. My only guess on the OP corn is “tall”. It sure does like to grow.
104 sounds so toasty
Christina,
That’s a hot one!! Keep it down there, please! I know, I should take some pictures around here and post some, just never seem to get around to it. How can I explain, when I’m outside for the day I always forget about the blog until I come back in. Then it’s to late, but I’ll try to remember to tell the daughter to take some today. Maybe she can get a swathing picture to help Emily out too.
