Cattle Are Home
October 27th, 2006 by Northern FarmerThe last cows are now officially home with their calves plus the steers for butchering have arrived back home today also. The field by my house is crowded with cattle, cows and calves and bulls, they are still all together so it’s a pretty sizable herd a hundred feet away from the house. But at least they’re not noisy, yet. That day is coming quick. I got in at dark, tired but satisfied, very little sleep the last two nights. I blame it on bad sauerkraut that somebody gave us. In reality I don’t know what it is, but it brings back memories of last winter with them old kidney stones on the move. I sure do hope I can sleep thru the night tonight. At any rate I don’t have to catch and move cattle tomorrow so that’s a plus. Take it easier.
You never know what a weekend will bring around here lately, and I couldn’t be happier. People visiting or something going on out here in the country. Last week we went to a Gospel Bluegrass evening at a little country church, not our church, but it sure was nice to be able to go there and enjoy the music. And afterwards, in true country tradition, they served pie, any kind you want, free! This ain’t exactly what I used to do in my wilder days, but Sunday morning sure felt good compared to Sunday mornings in my wilder days. Some of them were pretty rough. But a person has every right to be a fool and I exercised my rights to the hilt back then. Would I do some of them things all over again? No way! Funny I’m even alive.
I just wanted to do this short post, there’s messages in every post for different readers, this short one has a few in it. Those who they’re meant for should pick them up, if not, oh well, then I’ll e-mail. But I’m shot tonight, so I’ll keep it short. Just trying to get back in the swing of things here by posting more often. But with the cattle home there should be more time, finally, and this blog can get into winter mode. Tonight I’m to tired to rant, to blah for joking around, but well satisfied with how things are turning out here on the farm. Gotta go dig into the Word a bit and then hit the hay.

Hi Tom!
Glad to hear that all your cattle have been moved back for the winter! A person can sure rest easier as more things are finished and a person is ready for serious winter.
You should have an few beautiful days ahead of you as the past few have been really nice here. The next 2 are supposed to be in the upper 50s then it’s supposed to get colder again.
Our firewood supply is starting to look downright healthy. I spent the better part of today splitting wood with my hydraulic splitter. I tell you—-I can sure sleep better knowing that our provisions for food and warmth have been provided in abundance this coming winter.
God is Good! We have been blessed with such a bountiful year!
Let your LIGHT shine my friend!

Hey Steven!
Getten that wood pile huge, eh! I can’t wait to start doing that too. One job I like is going around with the old John Deere 50 and wagon sawing up dried up deadfall in fall. Burns as hot as coal. Plus just to be out in the woods enjoying it all!
I hope I can get a hog pen made today in the old barn near the horse stall, gotta make sure them hogs are in a nice place when the weather gets serious. Dig some more spuds this evening, just keep wrapping up around here.
It has been a Blessed year even with the drought, the calves are fat and sassy, cows are in exellent shape for winter, and spuds are something else. God is Good! God Bless!

Hey Tom,
Glad those cattle are in. I keep the goats close to the house this time of year too. Seems the good ol’ boys have a problem with their eyesight this time of year and they hunt those “white deer”. I guess the problem is everywhere though, my Deere has a hole in it where my father in law was in the field in Michigan when a not so smart individual (would you get offended if I said “Idiot”), didn’t see there was no “e” at the end of his deer hunting license.
Those wilder days comment hit home. I wouldn’t trade these Sunday mornings either. The thing is, I’ll hear a song or something that will remind me of those bad old days and get what I call the “God shudders”. I just start shaking realizing how stupid I was when I thought I was so smart. I see the same thing happening to my boys. Not much I can do, but try to show ‘em the right way, but they look at me like I’m stupid or something. It’s ok though, someday I’ll be sitting there with them and they’ll let out a little shiver……. and I’ll know its not because they are cold.
Those “God shudders” not only make me realize how far I’ve come, but how far I have left to go.
Have a GREAT day,
Brad

Brad,
I hear ya! Them hunters’ll shoot anything. We’ve got the stories from around here, believe me. And no offense at the word idiot, it applies to many.
Speaking of idiot, that was me in the old days, that’s for sure. But that’s water under the bridge now. Been a long time since I had one of them bad Sunday mornings and from now through eternity it ain’t ever gonna happen again! Done with it all! We got eternity to learn the all the good stuff and anybody that calls on the name of Jesus is living in eternity right now, (I love that)!
Have a good one and God Bless!!
