More Sunday Evening Preaching

December 17th, 2006 by Northern Farmer

A good Sunday around here, chores got done without a hitch this morning and even got some afternoon chores done in the morning freeing up the day more than normal. Now, taking advantage of the situation we decided to go to a local supper club for a noon brunch today after church with friends from church. That was hours ago, and I’m not in the least bit hungry yet this evening. So I guess we can divide the cost in two being that it covered supper also. That’s my kind of deal! The place was at a lake which are fairly common around here, pretty place really. And that lake was frozen like glass. If I was a tad bit younger I’d be putting on some ice skates and having at it. You don’t see that condition of ice to often. Most of the time there’s a little snow on it to take the slide out of it. Now a person could really get going! But on the down side we seen some folks extracting a fish house out of another lake on the way to church. That’s a job I wouldn’t want to have!

But it’s Sunday evening out here on the farm, chores are done, wood furnaces are fired up for the night. Time to sit back and relax, reflect on the day in church, prepare for the week to come. This week we won’t have church on Wednesday evening because we’re having a special service Friday evening with an evangelist coming. No Christmas programs this year, just getting right down into the Word of God. Works for me! And New Years Eve we’ll be getting together with church folks at one members farm for the evening. None of the regular ways of New Years Eve, and if it’s like times in the past, it’ll be an evening to remember! Yup, winter is filling up with things to do, all from just one little church in the hills.

I was thinking after all the things that have been going on here on this blog that maybe I would continue some of the subjects being talked about here. But then again what for, I’ve been hashing them over for a long time and it just goes round and around. It’s more important to walk the walk instead of just talking the talk. And looking back at the first to paragraphs it’s starting to show that we are living a darn good life out here. Sure it ain’t some modern lifestyle, but I tell you, we’re happy! And what can be better then that! Oh, we have our problems, we’re human you know. Never the less, a lifestyle that I used to only dream about is taking shape. Reminds me of some posts I did over a year ago about the olden days as chronicled in the Foxfire books. People always with other folks, helping out, visiting and just plain having fun. It might not be quite all the way there yet as it was years ago, but it’s a coming steadily.

Take all the subjects written here, all the different problems, and they seem to fall by the wayside when folks just get together like God made them to do. Society seems to want to drive people away from people, quite simply, because the American idol, which is the love of money and self, doesn’t want people helping people. Neither does it want people having fun with others, the reason, not much profit in a bunch of people having fun together, Praising the Lord, and living the way God designed us to live. You get a bunch together talking about good things, faith things, giving testimonies, having potlucks, well the money ain’t flowing into the proper channels in comparison to folks going it alone, having to buy pleasure, having to pay for entertainment. Folks spending time with each other ain’t buying video games and denned up by themselves day after day having to purchase pleasure. And in reality, there’s no pleasure at all from that lifestyle. Alone, always alone, not even knowing what everyone else in the family is doing let alone what could be neighbors and friends. People stuck on the TV when they could be doing something with the next door neighbor, not to mention they’re own family. You take all the subjects talked about here and put them together, and a person can see why this culture is going in the direction it’s going. Why poisoning our foods is barely a concern, why destroying God given life is barely looked at, from abortion to replacing good plants with GMOs. Nobody cares! It’s just self and the idol most worship, money.

The last few weeks here have been an eye opener. A couple weeks ago I wrote a post along the same lines with a quote from Second Timothy, chapter 3 about how society would be acting in this age. Barely got noticed. So I’ll say it again, you can’t have one foot standing on the Word of God and one foot standing on the ways of the world. It’s over and over and over again in the Bible, not exactly in them words, but its there. But also in these last few weeks the responses from a few folks here floored me. So much simple wisdom, and simple truth. The best example is from Steven, whom I call my friend, never met him personally, but more than likely will someday. He has a God given gift exposing the truth, not just an opinion, but the truth! I’ve learned so much from him about the state of the world today that to tell the truth, it’s changing me bigtime.

Many debates are written from a me, me attitude. Including many of my own. Steven’s words humble a person fast, exposing how far we’ve fallen. I personally thank him here, because I needed it bad! To look around and see how spoiled we are, how we figure it’s our right to live so unbelievably wealthy in comparison to the rest of the world. How it’s figured that everything is our God given right while trampling down the rest of our brothers and sisters in Christ around this globe. The American church for the most part is luke warm at best, always worried about me, me. And always turning back to the true idol, the economy. Me, me. And as this economic god grows, the poor will become poorer. And more and more will be poor. Boy, why does this sound like something I’ve read in the Good Book. You can brag up GMOs, you can brag up the medical system, you can brag up anything society has to offer, but everything keeps getting worse. Much worse. Man cannot solve anything without God, he just perverts it. Take the medical system, oh how some like to brag it up, but people really ain’t living much longer than years ago. Infant mortality has been vastly improved which adjusts the average lifespan upward, mostly because of Christian hospitals and researchers last century. But longer life has not happened. Drugged up life to counteract the ills of modern foods and pollutants is the accepted norm, and folks call it good! Meanwhile thousands are being aborted everyday in this country to the praise of the people. Have we come a long way with our knowledge? Some can call it good, some can call it a right, but this modern society is on a tailspin going down so fast that its unbelievable.

The only answer is, turn to God! Absolutely nothing else will help. We can try to figure out what to do, but it will fail. No matter what we try, it will fail without God. No social program will work, none. It all starts with people crying out to the Lord. And I’m a crying to Him. Don’t look at your neighbor and say, “he or she should change”, we gotta change first. I gotta change from the top of my head to the soles of my feet. Give it all to God, trust in Him. He got it under control, he got us covered.

    Hi Tom!

Again, thank-you for your kind words and your testimonial regarding by writings. But you got me blushing. I really didn’t believe that I can live up to all the good that you say of me. For one, I live with one foot in society as well. That is a foot that I’m attempting to move by exceedingly slow fractions of an inch at a time away from the evil that I preceive. As long as this modern, self-centered society exists, I don’t think I’ll ever live totally separate from it. I feel guilty every time I fill my car’s gas tank but I still do it. I’m trying to reduce the frequency tho.

But that doesn’t mean that I don’t try to live each day by God’s word and not by my own fleshly desires. I do believe that each one of us can ‘live by the spirit’ while surrounded by all forms of evil. But consider the difference between Abraham and Lot. Abraham was the original ‘Christian Agrarian’ to borrow a term. Whereas, Lot chose to live in Sodom, surrounded by all forms of evil. Lot was a God fearing man but lost all that he had except his daughers and ended up living in a cave because of his choices. Abraham on the other hand, was continually and abundantly blessed all the days of his life.

I greatly admire your faith and the life choices that you are making. I am very envious of your close multi-generational family life. I was born into a community such as that but now it is just a memory.

Trust in God, my friend as you are doing! Our faith is not measured by how many positive comments we get when we write about subjects that challenge peoples’ preconceived notions!

Tom, I hope you give thanks everyday for all the blessings of church and community that are showering down on you and your family. May it inspire you to more writing and speaking of the truth!

Tom and Steve… both great insights. I know living and “playing” here in Montana has had a huge impact on my having my feet more planted in G-d, but as Steve said, still have that one foot in society which I think is necessary. Just keep your eyes on the Prize

Virtual hug and shalom to you both

    Hey Steven!
We all have one foot in society, me more than many. The biggest thing is not to make it our most important thing, an idol. The early christians lived in the empire, were involved in everyday life, but Christ was their King!
When we make society our idol that’s when she goes downhill. That’s when families fall apart, that’s when the lust for more and more takes over. God wants His people to prosper, it’s said over and over again in the Bible. He wants abundance for us, not poverty. And abundance is what we’re getting here. An abundance of friends that I’m so thankful for.
I know you and me are pretty much on the same page with this. I won’t go into details, slow typer you know :) Plus I can smell supper cookin!
One of these days I’ll have to post about healings, that’s where it really gets interesting! Maybe here or on the other blog, I don’t know, but trusting in the Lord instead of man can do some incredible things!
    God Bless You My Friend!

    Brent,
Oh boy, do I ever give thanks! That’s why I mention it here and there on this blog, I can’t keep that under my hat!! I wish you were closer because I’d invite you to our Friday night service this week. It’s going to be something very special!
    God Bless!

    GP,
I know, show me one person here that doesn’t have one foot in the world including me and we’ll be seeing one incredible person! But as for me, well, gotta take that one foot that’s in the world or society and use it for glorifying God! Win the lost, spread the Word, preach the Gospel. And mostly, love thy neighbor! Then that foot in the world isn’t dragging a person down deeper into it.
How bout a virtual hug back to my Montana friend!!
    God Bless!
