Portable Milking Stanchion

January 25th, 2007 by Jim V

Here is a picture of the portable milking stanchion that Nathan described in an earlier post. Since this picture, he has modified it some, including the addition of a place to hold feed that the cows can eat as they are being milked. To completely finish the portable milking stanchion, he will need to add some sort of awning so that milking can be done in the rain. There is room for a generator and vacuum pump on the platform above the wheels. Some sort of gating system might also be needed to direct multiple cows in and out of the stanchions.

In the background you can see the Salatin’s feeding system - feeders that can be raised as the manure pack deepens.

Interesting. Farmers are great gadget makers. By the way, the Kansas Milkmaid, has made her last post on her blog today, Her husband is getting worse from the cancer that he has. Sad another voice we won’t hear from again. Hope you stay around a while.

That there is one fine piece of equipment!! I’m serious. Great ingenuity!! Poor Nathan would never make it here on my place. He builds stuff way too sturdy :) . Great Idea Nathan!! Now if you come up with any designs for old wood pallets or anything, let me know. My wife says I harvest pallets and manure better than anything else here :) Of course, trying to keep this place diverse, I also raise trailers…….

    Have a GREAT day,
    Brad

If we ever find the cord for the digital camera I’d sure like to post some inventions too. The last time it was seen was in my office so one of these days we’ll have to start a search and rescue operation in this room. Thanks for posting the photo!

Inventions or gizmos as I like to call them. Of all the things to do with farmin, I like makin, talkin, seein and hearin about them the most. Get in that office and start lookin Tom. If anyone thinks a farmer is backwoods just have a look at the labour savin stuff they think up and build.

    Guy,
You wouldn’t believe the junk I dragged out today, more parts for the buzz saw and then an old saw sharpener that’s been in a corner of the old machine shed for thirty years. I must be getting childish in my older age dragging all them memories out. But we’ll get er done!

    Jim,
I got your photo resizing instructions, gave me a headache reading them :) Me and computers sure have a hard time together! I though I’d hit bigtime when I figured out how to change the deck faces on the solitaire game on this thing. But I’ll give it a good try one of these days and see what happens! Maybe I should call the daughter in on this project, hmmm…..
