No Need to Worry!
March 9th, 2007 by Northern FarmerA Friday evening after one of the warmest and best days to come along in a while around these parts. There’s even water running here and there. And keeping farmer tradition I’m hoping it’ll freeze back down tonight so I can bring some bred heifers home early tomorrow morning from the lot across the tar road. I’m hoping to do it before we really mud out. And with the snow we’ve had and the ground froze to about five feet down it looks like we have a good possibility of an extended mud season here. But mud beats dust any old day, trust me on that one. Ain’t complaining one bit because if you want gloom and doom just go a few drought years and see how tickled pink you get! I always say, the most important mineral a crop can get is water, after that everything else is just icing on the cake.
But maybe this weather pattern finally changed and I can complain about mud more often to keep up my farmer image, complaining I mean. Ah, to bury tractors again like the good old days. No dust on the face, just a mud coating all over the body from dragging chains, hooking up tractor to tractor, then getting unstuck, going out in the mud and unhooking tractors. Dragging heavy log chains through the mud, feet getting the size of “Bigfoot’sâ€, only heavier. Yup, looking forward to Spring!
I think a person could make quite a study on getting stuck and getting unstuck. I figure I’m in the professor category on this subject being that I’ve done it successfully so many times. Getting stuck that is. Should really write a “how to†manual so folks can avoid the pitfalls and bore right in like a good farmer should. Until then, any advice seekers just drop me an e-mail and I’ll get you on the right path!
Well let’s see here, what should I write about this evening? Continue last evenings rant, I don’t know really. I could preach, I could write romance advice, (by the way, tomorrow’s our wedding anniversary here………what should I do???) Better continue on here, I could write about crop rotations, critters, farm buildings or a ton of other stuff. Should just spin the bottle and see which, eh! How about country partying??!! Yup, that strikes a cord! How about some Bluegrass Music, some fresh boiled sweet corn, some country ham. How about folks getting together on a summer weekend and having the time of their lives! Yes! Summers coming and it’ll be getting into that season soon!
Now these ain’t some high class shindigs, nope, these are much better than that high society stuff. You can take what the world calls fun and flush it down in my reading room for all I care. I want good times, real people! Real food and real music! There’s not anything in the world that I enjoy more than to be in the country or a real small country town doing these things. On the internet I’ve been called a hick, bumpkin, goober, you name it. Not on this site, but believe me, it’s happened on other sites that I was aware of, and how many I didn’t catch, well I don’t know. But no matter, I always figure folks that figure they’re so high class can just say what they please and I’ll keep on doing what I do and everyone’s happy. I just do a community service giving some folks a target, that way they stay busy. Keeps them out of trouble you know.
But back to where ever I was, summer, yes! Sweet corn boils are my favorite and this summer there’s going to be a lot of sweet corn planted on this place! Space the plantings out so we have a longer season here. A bit more opportunity for several boils that way! Someday I figure we’ll even have to build a Gospel Barn so it can be a regular event around here. This has been burning in my mind for years and it keeps getting hotter as time goes on. Well, I figure a multi purpose building, one could make it into a farm type store where the farm sells produce and products and with a few things easily moved around, presto, one has a meeting hall, a bluegrass and gospel building and the like. Yup, someday, someday!
Well, I never did get to talk about anything of importance this evening, but such is life. Can’t be serious all the time, turn into an old grump when a person takes on all the problems out there. Naw, sometimes a person gotta kick back and enjoy it a bit. Jesus said there’s no need to worry, so who am I to disobey that? Gotta just do my favorite thing and act like a young’un. Now that’s gotta be one of the biggest benefits of living this kinda life, no boss to please. Don’t have to worry what folks think. And as folks that read this can tell, I don’t write to fit in with anyone out there, just do what I do. That’s the way I figure it should be. And I hope that’ll never change.

Guy,
Tom’s computer died, so he won’t be able to get to this blog or email for a few days. He is hoping that his computer gets fixed and upgraded by the middle of this week, but it could also take longer. He is going to get back an upgraded, fancier computer.
I forgot to ask him what he got his wife for their anniversary. I looked at the Gospel Barn and it looks good to me. I could definitely go for a sweet corn boil along with some good Gospel music.
