Some Old Fashioned Seed

January 30th, 2008 by Northern Farmer

Folks, I was thinking, oh, oh. I was wondering if anyone out there was interested in any open pollinated corn seed. I’ve been trading with a reader Don. And it occurred to me that some homesteaders and small farmers might like to try some seeds we plant on the farm. Plus it tis the season for planning our gardens and crops. I’d like to offer some Minnesota 13 and Wapsie Valley seed corn to anyone that has an interest in planting a small patch. What I figure is I’d give the seed away, a small amount and the person getting the seed would only have to pay postage and the cost of the bigger envelope. This way anyone wanting to establish their own seed corn for their homestead would have starting seed. Both varieties do very well here in Minnesota. I won’t go into all the particulars on the breeds of seeds but they both are excellent corns. Plus I’m open to any trades. Contact me here. Any questions just fire away on this here blog!

    Hi Tom,
I’d love to plant a small patch of your corn!! I’d also like to send you something in return …I grow almost all OP things. Yummy! I can recommend some great tomatoes, beans etc. Just let me know what your interests would be.

    Blessings,
    Cheri

    Hey Cheri!
I’m kinda a bean man myself so if you have an old fashioned bean you’d recommend I’d be happy to swap. Remember that the corns I’m offering are basically field corns, not sweet corns, I don’t know how they’d do with corn meal. Maybe someone out there knows. But like my dad always tells me, they ate Mn 13 on the cob when they were kids before sweet corn was even heard of in this area. What I’m gonna do is keep this open till Feb 15 and then I’ll get the right amount of heavier duty envelopes and send everything out at once.

    Thanks!

They will do well as corn meal. Corn meal is made from field corn which includes dent corn, flint corn and flower corn. Which type is used depends on which part of the world you are from. The MN13 and Wapsie Valley are dent corn. I’ve been hand grinding corn meal this year from yellow, white and red open pollinated dent corn and it is so good that it makes the stuff from the store taste like sawdust.

    Hi Tom,
    Field corn would be wonderful!
Have you ever grown Rattlesnake beans…also called Preacher Beans in the south? YUMMY! They are a pole bean and produce the sweetest beans. When I have company they always think I have done something in the cooking process to make them so good and I have to confess that it was God’s doing..not my cooking skills.

If that sounds good, I’ll dig out my seed and pack some up for you. Just need you to email me your address.

Thanks Don! Live and learn I always say. That puts a whole new meaning to a corn crib full of Open Pollinated corn eh!

    Hey Cheri!
I grew them last year and they were great to say the least. Didn’t get to save any seed though, rough year in the garden you know. I’d love to trade some beans for corn! My address is on the contact page on our farm website. Here’s hoping this coming year will produce a bountiful garden with beautiful rains and everything going like clockwork!! Well, a guy can dream can’t he :)

  6. Kris in WA Says:

    Hi Tom,

How do you think the corn would grow in a wetter climate (western WA), than that of MN?

I’ve never grown anything other than sweet corn, so don’t know the process as to how it is finished. Kris in WA

  7. Northern Farmer Says:

    Hey Kris!

It should make it over your way, I’ve been in your area and it’s probably friendlier than ours for corn. Field corn is just left on the stalk till its dry, not much special has to be done for it to ripen.

  8. Kris in WA Says:

Thanks for the info on finishing the corn, Tom! I’ll be in contact with you. Blessings, Kris in WA
