Harvest Time

August 7th, 2008 by Northern Farmer

Posting is kinda on the back burner this week with oats combining and straw baling taking place around here. All is going well so far and if all holds together, (literally), we should wrap up combining tomorrow and baling the day after that. Just came in for the day, everything went well, no breakdowns and the oats is running around seventy five bushel per acre, not all to bad. Not a bumper crop, but no disaster either. Looks like the straw is running pretty good too. Tomorrow’s combining will be closer to home and I always like that much more than being a couple miles from home. Easy walking distance tomorrow, plus in the middle of the section so I don’t have to watch traffic watching me as they zoom by with all that “cheap gas” that they’re burning nowadays eh. So I’d better get cleaned up and have me a supper before dark and then read a little out of the Word and hit the hay for the day. Tomorrow comes quick!

    Hi Tom,

Speaking of harvest………..at what age do you butcher your partridge rock chickens? Ours are 15 wks old right now.

    Thanks

    Hi Theresa!

Sounds like butchering time over at your place :)

I like to butcher the main run at about twelve weeks. Same with the White Rocks we have, 12 weeks. I sometimes have butchered them earlier, but the feathers seem to come right of when they’re at twelve weeks. I haven’t experienced pin feathers at that age.
