A Timid Preacher or Not

October 2nd, 2008 by Northern Farmer

Day after day putting up fence around here and I should be finished up tomorrow Lord willing! The weather was good today, sunny out and in the sixties and they’re talking up frost tonight and tomorrow night. I had frost on the building roofs this morning for a bit but don’t see any corn hit by it. Should happen though in the next couple of nights. Maybe it’ll finally be the last of the tomatoes and that’s fine with us too. We have more than enough put away and to put it bluntly we look forward to things changing in season.

Something must be up though. I was dwelling on the last post for the last few days and it seems every direction I turn it gets expanded on. I won’t write about the bankers and all the other gurus of greed, no I won’t. Seems folks get offended by the truth, so I’ll write the truth cause there’s always some that need offending. Sound Christian? Well, let’s see. Nowadays it is an excepted rule that we’re not supposed to offend folks. Now in my last post Andrew Jackson sure didn’t make the bankers have a “feel good day” with his remarks to them! Nope, he told the truth. Now some might say, “Tom, we all sin so we’re not supposed to offend folks”. Well, then John the Baptist was sure on a bad course when he called the religious leaders a bunch of vipers to their face. Or Jesus confronting the self righteous, again not a feel good session.

Now Andy Jackson got confronted a while before he became president. The man confronting him was Peter Cartwright, a Methodist circuit rider,(picture above). Once Cartwright warned General Jackson (future President of the United States) that he would be damned to Hell just as quickly as any other man if he did not repent. A timid preacher apologized to Jackson for Cartwright’s bluntness. The general retorted that Christ’s ministers ought to love everybody and fear no mortal man, adding that he wished he had a few thousand officers like Peter Cartwright. First I notice that a timid preacher got his nose involved and apologized to Jackson, sounds allot like folks today, not wanting the truth to be set forth. Worried about offending folks and all. And with such a luke warm church as is in this country today this is the norm. Never offend anyone, try to get along. We look away from abortion and a host of other atrocities and think we are being “Christian”. Well, we’re not. Second thing I notice is Jackson’s reply that Christ’s ministers ought to love every body and fear no mortal man. Oh how we could use some folks like that!

I have been told by numerous folks that I don’t stomp and snort like I used to on this blog, and that’s partly true. I mellowed out for sometime compared to years ago. But there was a reason for that. I was studying, studying the Word of God, and didn’t want to end up doing all the wrong things. I started wondering about stomp and snort posting, hellfire and brimstone writing and wondered if I was a little overboard. I’ve come to the conclusion that I wasn’t. Made plenty of mistakes along the way, but the messages were never out of hate, they were always out of concern for folks that were taking the wrong road. Always concerned about a materialistic society that was bound for hell. It couldn’t get much plainer than that.

Will it continue? You bet! I figure there’s nothing easier than the internet if folks get offended here, just click out and bye, bye. But I will tell the truth here, whether folks like it or not. And I can safely say I won’t back peddle, I’ll call a spade a spade and that’s it. When I look back at the ministries of those who did make a difference I see a pattern, a pattern that shows they never backed down from proclaiming the Kingdom. All the way from Bible times to now. The most opposition they would get would be from folks that called themselves religious but were nothing but vipers. Folks that are totally at ease with the system, wanting it to continue because they figure they’ll come out ahead with it. But it doesn’t work that way. In the times coming up if anyone has faith in the system I believe they will get the just reward for the direction their faith is pointed. Not as a judgment of God, just a self imposed end. One that a person gets by following the world and not trusting in the Lord. And that’s just here and has nothing to do yet with eternity!

I don’t ever want to have to answer for being timid in this respect. I don’t ever want to have to “please” man in order to feel good about myself, which wouldn’t work anyhow. Nope, just do what’s right, speak the truth and keep on plugging.

    Tom,

Keep proclaiming the truth. I am tired of wishy-washy proclamation of the truth. We’ve been hearing some wishy-washy handling of the truth in the last few weeks and I have had to do sit down with my children to make sure that they are getting the whole truth.

I am getting tired of making fence as well … almost makes me wish for winter. With our dry weather the whole summer seems to be a blur of putting up more fence.

    Jim,
There’s allot of wishy-washy every way a person turns. And that’s a good thing to make sure our children get the truth from us and we don’t just figure that they’ll figure it out for themselves. Cause they have absolutely everything going against them if we leave it to society to form their ideas of what’s going on.
This should be the last day of making fence for a while. Just got to make a fence over a drainage ditch and also make a gate, then test the fence and if all is well, just let those cows out to get fat! Then its time to start making some firewood!

Tom, I’ve been a lurker for awhile but just had to pop on to say “Keep telling the truth and keep preaching it!!” I agree that there is too much wishy-washy out there and it feels good to be able to come to your site and ‘hear’ the truth.

    Thanks.

Tom, great post, I could not agree more with Jim and Beth, keep preaching the truth. With everything going on in our world I have to believe people are getting tired of being lied to both politically and spiritually. If each of us would spread the truth to several other people then they pass it and so forth, just imagine the effect we could have on society, hopefully people will be receptive. Keep Looking UP!!! Tim

    Hi Beth!
I’ll be getting back to some old fashioned business around here as time goes on and I thank you for “lurking” and especially thank you for commenting!! It always makes my day when a person that’s been lurking for some time comments :) Thanks and God Bless!!

    Tim,
I sure do agree with your statement that folks are getting tired of being lied to both politically and spiritually! As I said a couple of posts ago, I believe there will be a move of God as things start to shake in this society, or putting it another way, things will shake as God moves! Now that silage is done and the cattle are on fall pasture as of today we were planning this evening on starting our “circuit” and its amazing how many places in a thirty mile radius we have already come up with to visit, or “bother’ depending on how they look at it, in spreading the Gospel. Some pretty tough cases on the list let me tell you, but some of these would never come to a church for anything so church is coming to them. I’m kind of a tough minded guy myself so I ain’t all to bothered going to many of these folks. As time goes on I’m hoping to have a little prayer support from readers here, it would help, that’s for sure and either here or on Healing Waters blog I’ll keep somewhat of a journal of much of it. I don’t want no tax exempt ministry that would tie my hands, “and mouth”, politically and spiritually when it comes to spreading the Word. In a way I think that’s why I’ve posted the last couple of posts the way I have, to prepare myself and the way I do things.
(I’m long winded tonight :) ). I posted a paper on circuit riders here:
    http://healingwatersflow.wordpress.com/circuit-riders/
Basically I posted it for my own reference but it sure is interesting to me. Since the Book of Acts I don’t think anything has ever even come close to equaling the impact that the old time Methodist folks had in spreading the Gospel. They left everyone in the dust in that day and time. And I sure don’t see why it couldn’t be brought back again, the methods they used is what I’m talking about. And in studying them they sure were against rampant materialism back then too so I kinda tend to lean into that camp.
    You keep looking UP TOO!
    God bless!

Tom, just let us know when, what and who you need prayer for, I am certainly in favor of getting down on my knees and praying for a brother in the Lord. In fact we will lift up your name this evening that God will give you strength, wisdom and the courage to say what God lays on your heart. I pray that those that hear your words will be pricked in the heart and ask what shall we do? God Bless you in your efforts. Tim

I’ll let you know Tim when ever there is a need! I know the first time I did some real preaching folks were praying and that sure did make a difference, went smooth, lost almost all of my nervousness when I started. Ain’t so scared of that anymore! But looking back it was a huge step that I never imagined that I would ever do in my lifetime. Water under the bridge now. What’s next I have no idea but will just keep pressing forward. And it sure does help having good folks backing me up in prayer I tell you!

    God Bless!
