Ready For The Storm
March 30th, 2009 by Northern FarmerLooks like March will go out like a lion around these here parts. That snowstorm looks like it’ll be arriving here sometimes during the night. Ain’t all too much a person can do about it but be ready for it as best they can. Having quite a spring in the upper Midwest with the flooding and storms and all of that! In our area we’re in good shape. Its a gently rolling area and major flooding is not usually a problem. just down in the creek bottoms and such. Saturday was kinda strange around here. I heard helicopters several times through the day. Found out Sunday they were medical helicopters evacuating some patients from the Fargo/Moorhead hospitals, bringing them down our way to the St Cloud hospital. Lots of action and lots of news in these parts lately. I heard they were having some minor flooding at our county seat today from the Mississippi River. Not big time or anything, unless its you getting flooded, just some apartments or something getting flooded down near the river bottom. Our creek is almost back in its banks thanks to the freeze up here lately. That really will drop a swollen creek fast.
So with a snowstorm and maybe blizzard conditions staring me in the face for tomorrow I have to make sure all is ready. The cows are fat, so that’s a plus and the temps are not brutal cold or anything like that so there’s a good combination. They can pretty much ride out the storm out there in their seven acre calving pasture. Its a far cry from fifty below so I’m not too worried and they don’t look all to worried either as I write, they’re laying around chewing their cud with that damp east wind blowing on em. No problem.
Getting ready for Easter at our little country church. Got a guest minister coming in and it should be good! This will be an evangelistic service with soul winning in mind, my kinda service! I figure Easter is for doing what God wants us to do and that’s enlarging His kingdom, not sitting around doing nothing. Gotta get on the phone, stop in for visits and such, spreading the word around about the special service. The way things are going in these here parts I don’t think I’ll be overworked planting potatoes and onions on Good Friday. That might be much later unless there’s an absolute miracle or something!
Even with the cool east wind and snow flurries this morning half the roof on the old dairy barn got steel roofing today. Them fellers were up there and I wasn’t. Ah, to be young again and half nuts, working in that kind of weather up on a steep barn roof. They say that they don’t plan on coming now for a couple days till this storm coming blows itself out, then they’ll finish er up. Looking good though and I’m well satisfied! That roof should outlast me.
So, I gotta get myself back outside for a bit, sure wish it was seventy above but such is not the case. Gotta check a few things to make sure if we have us a blizzard we’re all set.
