Getting Busy!
April 16th, 2009 by Northern FarmerDrying up pretty fast around these parts! Even the cow barn lot has only a small wet spot left, this was a really good dry down year even though we’ve had plenty of moister! Oh Lord, getting things ready for the field, don’t know when I’ll start, maybe tomorrow, maybe Saturday. Cleaned oats for seed yesterday and the day before that got about every piece of equipment for the small grains planting ready. Everything is greases up and ready to go. Just got to turn the key in the tractor and away we go! The plan that I had since last fall is working great, the plan of putting the cow herd out on the neighbor’s corn stubble as the pastures start greening up. The cows look very content and happy out there. Even when I feed them their little bit of silage and hay they ain’t all that hungry and that’s a welcome sight!
Got a million things to do around here, both on the farm and with church. In other words I gotta figure out something to keep me busy talking behind the pulpit for an hour or so, quick! I learned from past mistakes what not to do so that’s a plus! Oh well, as long as they remember to put a water glass or two up there!
I’ll make this post short and sweet, tis the season you know! But seventy degree temperatures have a way of agreeing with me. I praise the Lord that we survived the long miserable winter! Everyone a feller talks to pretty much feels the same way around these parts. Put on a new straw western hat today and that’s always the mark of the new season. By the end of the season it’ll be pretty rough looking from being sat on in the pickup or things thrown on top of it, funny how that always goes.

Morning Tom!
Yesterday was my one day off (between two sets of 11 work days straight) so I was able to put it to good use changing oil on the tractor and greasing up the disc. Late in the day I was able to disc up 10 acres of last years bean stubble. It’s really dry here, that field is usually a tractor sinker this time of year but I didn’t even spin a tire! We are hoping for rain this weekend, the winter wheat is greening up but needs a drink. Saw a fella on Wednesday that was planting oats not far from me, a real early bird.

Morning Brent!
Just came in for something to eat here. What a drying day around here today, warm and breezy! Had the first “official calf born last evening out in the corn stubble and its a beautiful heifer, a keeper! Gonna grind a couple ton of feed after dinner here and probably head out with the Bobcat and pick a few larger rocks off a near by field and maybe, just maybe, get out there with the disk later.
It sure does feel good this time of year compared to winter! Hope to get the oats in this next week.
